A Painful Condition with a fissures Ayurveda solution at Mottengattil Ayurveda

Fissure in Ano, commonly known as an anal fissure, is a small tear or cut in the lining of the anus, causing pain, burning sensation, bleeding, and discomfort during bowel movements. Though it may seem like a minor problem, anyone who has experienced it knows how deeply it affects day-to-day life.

Fortunately, Ayurveda offers a gentle yet effective solution rooted in holistic healing — and at Mottengattil Ayurveda, we specialize in bringing this ancient wisdom to modern lives.

Understanding Fissure in Ano – The Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, an anal fissure is referred to as Parikartika, a condition described in classical texts as a painful and burning sensation in the anal region, often linked to constipation or hard stools. It is primarily caused by an imbalance in Vata dosha, sometimes aggravated by Pitta, leading to dryness, inflammation, and cracking of the anal mucosa which in turn results in severe burning sensation and pain especially during and after defecation.

Common Causes

  • Chronic constipation or hard stools
  • Excessive straining during bowel movements
  • Long-term diarrhea
  • Poor dietary habits (low fiber, spicy or oily food)
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Pregnancy and childbirth

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Sharp pain during or after passing stool
  • Bright red bleeding in stools or on toilet paper
  • Burning or itching sensation in the anal area
  • Visible cracks or tears near the anus
  • Muscle spasms or tightness in the anal sphincter

Why Choose ayurvedic medicine for fissures?

Unlike conventional treatments that may rely heavily on painkillers, laxatives, or surgery, Ayurveda works on the root cause — balancing the doshas, improving digestion, and naturally healing the tear.

At Mottengattil Ayurveda, our approach is personalized and focused on long-term recovery and prevention.

2. Herbal Medications

We use our own classical Ayurvedic formulations that help:

  • Soften stools
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Promote healing of the tear
  • Soothe pain and burning sensation
  • As it is devoid of preservatives the results are much more faster

Common herbs include:

  • Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) – promotes bowel health
  • Triphala – a gentle laxative and detoxifier
  • Jatyadi Taila – healing herbal oil used for local application
  • Yashtimadhu (Licorice) – anti-inflammatory and soothing
  • Chiravilwadi Kashaya – Heals the ulcer and helps in proper digestion
  • Murivenna – healing and soothens the anus

3. Shodhana Chikitsa (Detoxification Therapies)

One of the fundamental approaches in Ayurveda is Sodhana Chikitsa, which helps eliminate accumulated toxins and correct dosha imbalances.

For fissures, the following detoxification methods are commonly used:

Basti (Medicated Enema): Basti is the most effective treatment for Vata disorders, including fissures. It involves the administration of medicated oils or herbal decoctions through the rectum to soothe the intestines, soften stools, and lubricate the rectal lining. This therapy pacifies Vata, relieves pain, and promotes healing.

Kshara Karma (Alkaline Cauterization) (if required)

In chronic or non-healing fissures, our experts may recommend Kshara karma, a specialized Ayurvedic procedure involving medicated alkaline preparation to remove damaged tissue and promote the growth of healthy tissue. It’s minimally invasive and highly effective and can prevent the need for surgical intervention.

4. Sitz Baths & Local Therapies

Warm herbal sitz baths with Triphala decoction /Dashamoola/ Nalpamaradi help relax the muscles, reduce swelling, and promote healing.
